There was a large turnout at a public meeting in the Letterkenny Council Chamber last night expressing opposition to the government decision to abolish the town council structure and replace it with expanded county councils from next year’s local elections.
Councillors were joined by community and business leaders, who expressed concern that Letterkenny’s status as a Gateway Town will be diluted as a result of the abolition of the council.
The meeting came just days before Environment Minister Phil Hogan visits the town to open the new Water Treatment works at Magherenan, with some suggestions that the council boycott the function, and possibly even protest outside it.
However, Mayor Pascal Blake says it was decided that he would attend as mayor, and other councillors may also do so as a mark of respect to the staff and officials who have delivered the long awaited project………….
