Buncrana Councillor Nicholas Crossan has called on the President not to sign the Local Government Bill into law which gives effect to the scrapping of Town Councils.
The Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland has written a letter to Michael D Higgins to that effect.
Its argues that the Bill should be referred to the Supreme Court as it fails to adequately protect the right of political representation for local communities.
Councillor Crossan is calling on the President to refer the Bill to the Supreme Court in what he admits is the Association’s last throw of the dice:
