A Derry man, described by a judge as ‘an idiot’ because he could not distinguish between an Italian and a Pakistani, has been jailed.
24-year-old Raymond Anthony Lishman of 2, Wesley Street in Derry admitted a series of charges when he appeared at the local Magistrate’s Court.
The court was told that on October 29 last the owner of an Italian restaurant in Derry city centre saw Lishman and a female in a heated argument outside his premises.
He went out to see if he could help and at this Lishman picked up an advertising board and smashed it to the ground and called the Italian gentleman a ‘Paki b—–d’.
On June 3 Lishman’s partner called police stating that there had been an altercation and he had kicked her front door, smashed a window and threatened to burn her out.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that Lishman had engaged in ‘racially motivated abuse’.
He went on to say that ‘this idiot cannot tell the difference between an Italian gentleman and a Pakistani genetleman’ and added that the name of the restaurant, La Sosta, may have given that away.
He sentenced Lishman to 8 months in prison.
