Its emerged that a man who was stabbed on a merchant ship off the Donegal coast has been transferred to University Hospital, Galway in a critical condition.
A garda investigation is continuing into the incident, which was reported in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Malin Head Coastguard Station received the original call, and tasked the Sligo based rescue helicopter to the ‘Africa Star’, with cover from the Aer Corps Lear jet.
The man, who had sustained chest wounds was initially brought to Sligo General Hospital, and then transferred to Galway.
The ship is now at Killybegs, and gardai are on the scene investigating an assault on a ship upon the high seas.
The legal implications of the fact that the incident occurred in international waters are being examined.
The nationality of the injured man is not known.
