The Western Trust has confirmed that a Detox Unit will be operational in Omagh from January.
Foyle MLA Maeve Mc Laughlin, who chairs the Assemblys health committee has welcomed the news, saying it will be an eight bed in patient unit that will be operational around the clock.
She says this will cover the whole of the North West, including Derry, but is stressing that early intervention in Derry is vital, and she will continue to press for a model in the city similar to Nightingale project in Belfast, and this will be pursued through the NW addiction Taskforce.
She says detox is just one element of what must be a much wider response…….
