Ciaran Coll’s goal after only 26 seconds proved enough to decide an evenly fought contest. Harps, though, had Ciaran Gallagher to thank for keeping the home side at bay when he made a brilliant stop to deny Jack Watson on 88 minutes.
Not long before that, Gallagher had denied Ryan Swan with another fine save as UCD sought an equaliser.
But Harps managed to hold out and they will be delighted to go into next Friday night’s second leg with a one goal advantage. Coll, who was forced off because of injury in the first half, headed a brilliant winning goal, getting on the end of a Tagbo cross to beat UCD keeper, Conor O’Donnell.
