Finn Harps 2 v 1 Derry City
Over four thousand turned up on Friday night as Finn Harps and Derry City went head to head in difficult conditions on the opening night of the new SSE Airtricity League Premier Division campaign.
Derry started the brighter of the two sides but as the opening half progressed Harps go more into the game.
The goal came just before the break as the Harps new boys Adam Hanlon and David Scully combined.
Hanlon delivered the cross and Scully’s header was too much for Gerard Doherty in the Derry goals.
The Candystrips dominated possession in the second half but Harps grab their second goal against the run of play with fifteen minutes to go.
After a relaxed clearance by the Derry defence the ball was sent back in as Ryan Curran beat the offside trap to slot past Doherty and double the advantage.
In injury time Rory Patterson got in behind the Harps defence to stick the ball past Ciaran Gallagher and leave Harps with a nervious finish.
The victory, is Harps sixth in the league over Derry and only the second at Finn Park, the first of which was 1998.
Next weekend Harps travel to champions Dundalk.
