A decision by Ulster University to scrap its ‘Airdome’ project in Derry is being criticised, with local politicians questioning what this says about the university’s commitment to expanding the project in Magee.
The sports complex, including an enclosed arena which would double as a concert and exhibition space, was announced to great fanfare in 2024.
Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin says a high profile announcement two years ago positioned the ‘Airdome’ project as an integral part of the ongoing plans to expand Ulster University’s Magee campus.
Now, she says the scrapping of the project will create real concern in the city about what this means for the expansion of Magee as a whole.
She says everyone understands that Ulster University, and third-level education generally, faces significant financial pressures, and these need to be addressed in tandem with the Economy Minister and Executive. However, she says it feels like when there are projects to be scrapped, or cuts to be made, Magee is first in line.
Meanwhile, People before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin says the £18m cost of the dome is a drop in the ocean when compared to the £350m spent on the new Belfast campus.
This decision, he concludes, is utterly premature and reckless.
