The man who was shot and critically injured in Derry last night was named in the local Crown Court as Harry Boyle.
Mr. Boyle (25) of Lawrence Hill in Derry had been due to appear on drug related charges.
Mr. Mark Reel defence counsel for Boyle told the court: “Those who would replace our system of justice by one of terror, violence and fear have taken it upon themselves to shoot Mr. Boyle.
“He has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where as far as I know he has not regained consciousness.”
The barrister asked for an adjournment to obtain medical evidence.
He added: “In this case there was no application made for anonymity as there was no known specific threat.
“Unfortunately those individuals involved hadn’t flagged up their intentions.
“The nature of the charges he faced are not comparable to the violence meted out to him. ”
Judge Philip Babington said it was ‘very sad to hear that’.
The case was adjourned until May 4.
