Donegal claimed their second LIDL Ladies National Football League Division 2 title, following a comfortable 3-17 to 0-13 win over Westmeath in Parnell Park.
Michael Naughton’s charges bounced back from last years final disappointment to take silverware, and with it a place in Division 1 in 2017.
Naughton signed himself out of Letterkenny General Hospital to be present for the crunch encounter, and he wasn’t left disappointed as Donegal Ladies delivered an impressive display.
Donegal didn’t have it all their way in the opening stages, and were level twice inside 10 minutes, before an Amber Barrett goal handed them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Barrett’s goal came during a spell which saw Donegal register 1-5 without reply, with Laura Walsh responding with a point for Westmeath in the closing minute of the opening half, as Donegal took a 1-7 to 0-4 interval lead.
Karen Gutherie and Karen Hegarty traded points inside a minute of the restart, but Donegal once again kicked on.
Geraldine McLoughlin sustained an injury with Termon in the Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta last weekend, but played through the pain barrier, finishing with six points, including five from frees.
Yvonne McMonagle (2-5) added a brace of goals in the closing five minutes on the way to a 13-point win, with Donegal captain Niamh Hegarty lifting silverware after the game.
