Donegal finally got on the scoreboard with a goal from Ciaran Matthewson, which was followed by a point from Lee Henderson.
Mayo were made to work hard by Donegal to stay narrowly ahead, but as half-time approached, Mayo increased the gap and went in at the break ahead by five points on 1-05 v 0-13.
Mayo resumed the second half as they had the first by notching up the points and scored two and a goal to extend their lead to 10 points with the score at Donegal 1-05 (8) v 1-15 (18) Mayo.
Donegal struck back with five successive points without a response from Mayo to reduce the gap to five points.
Donegal’s Danny Cullen then scored a goal to reduce the gap to two points.
But it wasn’t enough of a fight back and Mayo ran out winners to reach the Nicky Rackard Cup Final.
