14 year old Rhys Irwin attended the 2016 British Thundersport Awards ceremony in England last weekend where he received his second place trophy for his assault on the British Superteens Championship.
Rhys was presented with the beautiful Silverware by Series Director and founder Ian Newton.
On the night Rhys was also honoured with the award for the ‘Overall Outstanding Performance for the Thundersport Series in 2016’ a reflection and testament to the natural style and racing ability of this teen in only his second season of short circuits.
To top the night off, Rhys was also awarded the ‘John Ward Memorial Trophy’. This is the commentators choice of rider racing in Thundersport. They obviously felt he had an exceptional year showing potential and that they enjoyed reporting on.
Rhys is the most successful Irish rider ever to contest the British Superteens with no less than 6 wins and 25 podiums throughout the season.
On the night an astonished Rhys said that he had a great 2016. “I thrilled with his second place finish in the Superteens by just 1 point against the very best teen riders but to be awarded ‘The Overall Outstanding performance’ for the whole Thundersport series and the ‘John Ward memorial Commentators choice’ is just brilliant. Its hard racing in the UK with extra travelling and the high standard of riding on full grids but to win ‘outstanding’ accolades makes it all worth it and is just a dream come true.”
“Now I’m looking forward to the 2017 series. I could stay on the same bike until I’m 19 which would make life easy because but I need a challenge so I’m moving on to a full race spec RRV Aprilia 450cc. It’s a big step for me and I can’t wait.”
The beaming Teen paid tribute to the huge family effort it took to get him to Thundersport, he thanked Trevor for providing his bike and his father Ivan and Garry team mechanics for all their work and dedication. He also paid tribute to James Gallagher of Oasis Bar Letterkenny his main title sponsor who made the whole thing possible for the last few years. Also thanks to Grace Ann and Wesley Regan of Clean Rubber Sligo/Donegal, Denis Sheridan DS Waste Kilmacrennan, Kelly’s Centra Mountain Top and Uncle Eustace Joe Macs Portadown.
