It’s been claimed that a Government announcement of a €61 million mackerel quota for Killybegs fishermen results in a €17 million loss to the sector.
While the Donegal based sector will be allocated 87 per cent of the overall quota, it equates to a loss of 20% in their catch according to Donegal Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher.
Deputy Gallagher says this is a disaster to the sector and will mean less opportunity and consequently less employment for the North West region:
