Border regions will ‘suffer significantly’ over VAT rate in North


A South Donegal Deputy has told the Dail that border regions are going to suffer significantly as a result of a reduction in the VAT rate in the North.
As part of the July Stimulus Package, the VAT rate for the hospitality sector here remained unchanged but a “staycation” tax voucher worth €125 was introduced to encourage off-season holidays in Ireland.
Speaking in the Dail on the Financial Provisions Bill 2020, Deputy Harkin relayed fears that people may refrain from travelling across the border unless a similar approach for the hospitality sector is adopted in Ireland:
