Inspection reports published on Donegal facilities

 

The Health Watchdog has published inspection reports on five facilities in Donegal.

A number of non-compliances have been identified in some of the centres.

At the Ballyshannon Community Nursing Unit, there were non-compliances recorded in the areas of registration, governance and management, premises and fire precautions.

At Donegal Community Hospital, non-compliances were identified in staffing, as well as governance and management.

At Falcarragh Community Hospital, non-compliances were recorded in in the areas of governance and management, personal possessions, premises, fire precautions and residents’ rights.

At Hillcrest Nursing Home in Letterkenny, non-compliances were identified in the areas of registration, staffing, training and staff development, records, governance and management, persons in charge, infection control, fire precautions, assessment and care plans, health care and residents’ rights.

No non-compliances were recorded at Larissa Lodge Nursing Home in Letterkenny.

In instances where issues have been identified, compliance plans have been produced by HIQA, with inspectors and management at the centres identifying timelines in which the issues can be resolved.

Statement from HSE:
Falcarragh Community Hospital

This HIQA report was the result of an unannounced inspection that took place on the 11th of November 2021 in the Falcarragh Community Hospital.

Falcarragh Community Hospital is managed by the HSE and located in Ballyconnell, Falcarragh, Co. Donegal. It is a community-based residential service currently accommodating the care needs of the older population in the Falcarragh and surrounding area including Tory Island. Falcarragh Community Hospital is a 35 bedded unit accommodating long-term care, respite, convalescent, rehabilitation and palliative care services to both males and females over 65 years of age.

This inspection identified that Falcarragh Community Hospital was compliant with ten of the fourteen judgements inspected, of which, four were substantially compliant and five were non-compliant.

The HSE has submitted action plans to address the areas of Non Compliance highlighted by HIQA in each of the individual HSE Units. HIQA have in all instances accepted the action plans submitted and the HSE continues to work with HIQA to implement these plans.

Donegal Community Hospital

This HIQA report was the result of an unannounced inspection that took place on the 2nd December 2021 in the Donegal Community Hospital.

Donegal Community Hospital is a purpose-built two-story building located in the town of Donegal, within walking distance of all local amenities. The residential part of the hospital is a 29-bed unit located on the ground floor, which provides palliative care, respite care, convalescence, rehabilitation, and continuing care. Accommodation comprises seven single bedrooms (six en suite), one en suite twin bedroom, and five multiple-occupancy bedrooms, each accommodating four residents. There are two sitting rooms, a dining room, and an oratory for communal use. The designated centre includes a treatment room, staff facilities, a small laundry, and a main kitchen.

This inspection identified that Donegal Community Hospital was compliant with twelve of the fourteen judgements inspected, of which four were substantially compliant and non-compliant in two.

Ballyshannon Community Nursing Unit

This HIQA report was the result of an unannounced inspection that took place on the 4th of November 2021 in the Ballyshannon Community Nursing Unit.

This Community Hospital is managed by the HSE and is located in Carrickboy, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. It is a community-based residential service currently accommodating the care needs of the older population in the Balyshannon and surrounding area. At Ballyshannon Community Nursing Unit, there are 27 beds providing long Term care and to male and females over 65 years of age.

This inspection identified that Ballyshannon Community Nursing Unit, was compliant with sixteen of the twenty judgements inspected, of which six were substantially compliant and non-compliant in four.

The HSE has submitted action plans to address the areas of Non Compliance highlighted by HIQA in each of the individual HSE Units. HIQA have in all instances accepted the action plans submitted and the HSE continues to work with HIQA to implement these plans.
