Only 38 new nursing home beds registered last year

A crisis is looming this winter due to a drop in the number of nursing home beds.

That’s the warning from Nursing Homes Ireland, which is concerned about a lack of long-term planning for the care requirements of the country’s ageing population.

An average of 1,000 extra beds are needed every year by 2040, according to the ESRI, but only 38 extra beds were registered last year.
