Shortage fears for some fruit and veg this summer

There’ll be a shortage of some fruits and vegetables this summer, with growers cutting back on production as costs rise.

The Irish Farmer’s Association is warning what does make it to the shelves will cost buyers a higher price, as farmers suffer a five fold rise in energy bills.

It says some growers had to decrease the temperature in their glasshouses, causing production delays – tomatoes were among the worst affected produce.

The Irish Times reports that harvests were down by a quarter in April – when they should have been at their peak.
