Social media bill does not go far enough to protect privacy rights – Deputy Pringle

A Donegal Deputy believes an appropriate bill needs to be put in place to ensure those who abuse people online are held to account to the same extent as those committing in-person abuse.

Speaking in the Dail on the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022, Deputy Thomas Pringle said he supports the intentions of the new bill, but could not fully support the bill as it just does not go far enough to protect privacy rights.

He says a bill is needed to ensure people are deterred from committing these acts online and also one that acknowledges the impact online abuse can have on the victims….
