One of Donegal’s most famous sportsmen Anthony Molloy will be among the guests at the Donegal Sports Star Awards anniversary event to honour the winners of 1980 and 1981 on Monday 17th of October in the Mount Errigal Hotel. Molloy will join Cathaoirleach Liam Blaney, Chief Executive John McLaughlin and Sports Star Awards Chairperson Grace Boyle as the winners of 1980 and 1981 are honoured at a 40th anniversary celebration. The events for both years should have taken place in 2020 and 2021 but had to be deferred due to the pandemic.
It’s fitting that the man who captained Donegal to their first ever All-Ireland Senior Football title has confirmed his attendance on the 30th anniversary of that historic triumph over Dublin at Croke Park. And to mark that 1992 success Molloy is also launching a book on his memories of that fantastic year at the end of October. Donegal Sports Star Awards Chairperson Grace Boyle said that Anthony Molloy was an icon in Donegal sport as the captain that lifted the whole County on that famous date of September 20th, 1992 when the Ardara man climbed the steps at Croke Park to raise the Sam Maguire Cup in front of the tens of thousands of Donegal fans on the pitch, along with those tuned in back at home and abroad.
“We are recognising the winners of Donegal Sports Star Awards from 1980 and 1981 to mark their 40th anniversaries so we thought it would be fitting that Anthony Molloy would be with us a guest seeing that it is the 30th anniversary of that 1992 success. He will be part of the presentation party along with the Cathaoirleach Cllr Liam Blaney, the Chief Executive of Donegal County Council John McLaughlin and myself. It is also extra special because Anthony is now a Cllr and the Council is our exclusive sponsor once again and we thank them for their continued support.”
Anthony Molloy was the special guest at the Donegal Sports Star Award in 2002. He was also honoured as a member of the 1992 County team who took the Overall Award that year after that historic All-Ireland success.
