Scottish Parliament cannot hold independence referendum without clearance from Westminster

The UK Supreme Court’s ruled Scotland’s Parliament does not have the power to hold a second independence referendum without the blessing of Westminster.

A panel of five justices have delivered their decision.

It’s a blow to Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s plans to hold a vote next October.

The UK Government argued her proposed referendum bill relates to a matter that’s reserved to Westminster.
