Donegal woman to read at funeral of Pope Benedict

Former Pope Benedict the 16th will be laid to rest today.

Mary Maguire, from Letterkenny has been selected to read one of the liturgical readings at the Requiem Mass.

The historic ceremony will take place in the surrounds of St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

It’s a rare occurrence for a current pope to preside over the funeral mass of his predecessor – with Benedict the first Pontiff to resign in 600 years.

The Archbishops of Armagh and Dublin, Eamon Martin and Dermot Farrell, will represent the Irish Catholic Church.

Rector of Knock Shrine and Parish Priest of Knock Fr. Richard Gibbons thinks he’ll leave behind a rich, but complex legacy:
