A record number of people sought asylum in Ireland during 2022, according to data released by the Department of Justice.
The figure is the highest since records began.
Last year, 13,319 people from around the world sought international protection here.
The number of applications for asylum exceeded the previous peak of 11,634, which was recorded in 2002.
Last year’s figure is six times as high as the figure recorded for 2021.
About 20 per cent of all those seeking asylum in 2022 were from Georgia; while around 13 per cent came from Algeria.
The total of those seeking international protection is in addition to the almost 70,000 Ukrainian refugees who arrived here last year.
