Memo of Ireland’s first military radar system to go to Cabinet

A memo will go to Cabinet this morning detailing plans for Ireland’s first military radar system.

The rollout of the system is expected to be complete by 2028.

The Department of Foreign Affairs will enter into negotiations with four countries about providing a state-of-the-art military radar system for the country.

The names of those four countries aren’t being released as they’re considered commercially sensitive.

The rollout of radar was recommended under the Commission on the defence forces, and the technology will include three elements: land-based long-range primary radar, ground-based air defence systems and maritime radar.

After the system is operational, the State will be able to detect all aircraft moving through Irish airspace, including those with their transponders turned off.
