The Department of Justice’s Community Engagement Team says it is not seeking any extra capacity for the location of International Protection Applicants in Buncrana, and nor does it have any offers.
It’s in response to a question from Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn, who raised questions about an extension to a property on Walkers Lane which is already being used as an IPAS centre.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn says at this point, it would be unreasonable to expect Buncrana and Donegal to take any more…………….
Communication between Deputy MacLochlainn and the Department of Justice’s Community Engagement Team –
A chairde,
There is speculation in the local community of Buncrana, Co. Donegal that an extension to a building currently housing international protection applicants will be utilised to house additional applicants/ asylum seekers once it is completed. The building is situated at Walker’s Lane, Buncrana.
In April of this year, you advised me that: The Department is not appraising any properties in Buncrana to accommodate people seeking international protection. Is this still your position?
Regards, Pádraig
Response – The Community Engagement team can confirm the International Protection Accommodation Service has received no offer of accommodation in respect of Walker’s Lane, and the Department is not examining any properties in Buncrana, Co. Donegal to accommodate people seeking international protection
