Tánaiste to meet with French Foreign Minister to seek support for peacekeepers in Lebanon

The Tánaiste will meet with the French Foreign Minister today to solidify support for peacekeepers in Lebanon.

The UNIFIL mandate will be decided by the UN Security Council this week.

The Irish Defence Forces have been working under UNIFIL since 1978, with over 30,000 peacekeepers serving in Lebanon since then.

The current mandate will expire on Sunday and it will be up to the UN Security Council to renew it.

Tánaiste Simon Harris says it’s essential that peacekeeping work continues, saying he is ‘deeply conscious’ of the importance of the mission.

He’s held meetings with counterparts in Lebanon, Italy, the US, and with UN officials in recent days to strengthen support.

This afternoon, he’ll meet with the French Foreign Minister, who is amongst those calling for the mandate to be renewed.
