OURS TO PROTECT BLOG: YOUNG PERSON’S POV

Taking part in Ours To Protect was a great experience that let me express my thoughts about protecting the environment. I think it’s a great initiative to inform people about how they could be damaging the environment and the many ways they can help it instead.

I was talking to Donna-Marie about what we learn about the environment in school, and how I think that young people are much more aware of the environment and their carbon footprint because of initiatives within schools. I also got to talk about the public transport that is available, how affordable it is and how easy it is for young people to use.

I think facilities like Local Link are fantastic as they allow us to lessen our negative effects on the environment, while also providing an accessible service allowing transport for people who would otherwise need to drive or get a taxi/Uber.

The episode mainly focused on fossil fuels. We use them every day, whether directly by driving cars or burning coal or turf, or indirectly by using electricity which was generated using fossil fuels. They are definitely the stand-out cause of climate change and the acceleration of the greenhouse effect.

Being on Ours To Protect sparked conversation at home about our electricity usage, and we have since made changes to try and lessen it. For example we never used to turn our TV, oven or dishwasher off by the plug at night, but now all of these are switched off by whoever is locking up the house. Simple changes like this: turning off plugs, waiting until you have a full load before putting on the dishwasher or washing machine, or even as simple as taking shorter showers can have a positive effect on your carbon footprint.

I hope that Ours To Protect will do similar things for other people, helping us to all do our own piece to help tackle the climate crisis.
