Stage set for Bundoran Races this Saturday

While horse and pony racing may not always capture the attention it deserves, the sport has played a hugely important role in developing some of Ireland and Britain’s top jockeys.
Many racing enthusiasts may be surprised to learn just how many successful riders learned their trade at the unique and picturesque pony racing track owned by Brendan Keown.
Over the years, the undulating course near the seaside town of Bundoran, located just across the road from Finner Camp, has provided the perfect training ground for young riders.
Among those who have raced around the famous track are Dylan Browne-McMonagle, Rossa Ryan, Keith Donoghue, Sam Ewing, Oisin Orr, Luke McAteer, Martin Harley and in more recent years, Patrick McGettigan and Jamie Orr.
For the past two decades, Northwest Pony Racing has effectively become an academy for aspiring jockeys, helping to nurture talent that has gone on to achieve success on some of the biggest racecourses in Ireland, Britain and beyond.
Dylan Browne McMonagle is just one outstanding example of the quality of riders who have emerged through the local pony racing ranks.
The track also has a proud history of showcasing future stars.
In July 2007, this year’s English Derby-winning jockey Ronan Whelan stormed over the famous hill aboard Little Man to record an impressive victory — a reminder of the calibre of talent that has graced the course over the years.
This year’s meeting will also honour the memory of the late Margo Quinn, who passed away over a year ago.
Margo played an invaluable role in the running of the races and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed. In recognition of her dedication and contribution to the sport, a special memorial race will be held in her honour.
Organisers would also like to acknowledge and thank all sponsors whose generous support helps make the event possible. Their contribution will be recognised and greatly appreciated on race day.
A six-race card is planned and spectators are encouraged to arrive early to avoid traffic delays.
It promises to be a fantastic family day out, offering the opportunity to watch the stars of the future showcase their talent in a unique racing setting. Refreshments will be available on site throughout the day.
For those attending, the venue can be located using Eircode: F94C985 with a 2:30pm start.
