11 of those patients were in the Emergency Department.
The figure of 40 is the joint-fourth highest in the country today, according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
Sligo University Hospital recorded the third-highest figure, with 44 patients waiting for a bed.
The highest was at University Hospital Limerick, where 82 patients were waiting this morning.
