A special homecoming reception for European 800m gold medallist Mark English will take place on Wednesday evening – and everyone is welcome!
Finn Valley AC are hosting a welcome home for English, who won the 800m gold in Birmingham and then finished sixth in the 800m final last weekend at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships.
The function will take place in the Finn Valley Centre at 7pm and the club has extended an open invitation to the public.
English has now won six European medals and in Birmingham he became the first Irish male athlete to win a European Championships gold. In his semi-final, he clocked a European Championship record of 1:43.49 – wiping out Olaf Beyer’s 1:43.84 from 1978 in the process.
The Donegal runner took gold in 1:45.26, storming down the home straight at the Alexander Stadium to top the podium.
Last weekend in Budapest, English finished sixth at the World Ultimates – setting a new PB in his first senior global final, going 1:42.78.
He has recorded six of his seven fastest times in 2026 – and also landed new Irish 1000m, indoor 800m and indoor 600m records.
Now, the people of Donegal will get a chance to turn out and acclaim their history-maker.
