The long-awaited new National Maternity Hospital in Dublin is finally set to move into the construction phase, following Government approval.
The multi-million euro development at Elm Park is expected to be completed by 2033.
Yesterday’s announcement was seen as a major step forward for a project that’s been years in the making.
Construction of the new National Maternity Hospital on the St Vincent’s campus is due to begin in the first three months of next year.
The seven-storey building will have capacity for 10,000 births annually, with 244 private rooms, 24 birthing suites and five operating theatres.
It’ll be twice the size of the existing hospital at Holles Street, and will provide specialist services including fertility treatment, neonatal intensive care and endometriosis care.
John Sisk and Son has been appointed as the main contractor.
The HSE says the development will transform maternity and women’s healthcare, with the new hospital scheduled for completion in 2033.
