FAI Senior Cup result: Letterkenny Rovers 2 – 1 Portmarnock
High-flying Letterkenny Rovers made history again today when they reached the second round of the FAI Senior Cup.
They beat Leinster Senior League side Portmarnock with a winner only three minutes from the end of time.
It was a nervy few minutes of injury time at Rovers’ Leckview home in Letterkenny
Match ref Michael Connolly finally blew up to start the celebrations.
The game started brightly for Rovers who scored in the eighth minute through Christy Connaghan.
Portmarnock equalised with a penalty on 16 minutes.
Letterkenny goalie Rory Kelly got a yellow card for the penalty trip, meaning he had to be extra careful for the rest of the game.
He didn’t let the caution distract him and had another good game.
It was an entertaining first half with the teams sharing the spoils and reachingthe midway point with the score at 1-1.
The dramatic finale came when Terence Shiels scored for Rovers from a free-kick to give them a 2-1 lead at home with only three minutes to go.
That proved to be the winner.
High-flying Rovers made history with today’s victroy as it is the first time that they have qualified for the second round of the FAI Senior Cup.
It means they could be drawn to face a big club like Finn Harps for a potentially lucrative Donegal derby.
Rovers also made history last week when they reached the FAI Intermediate Cup Final for the first time.
