Town Council to meet for special discussion on winter options

Letterkenny Town Council is to hold a special meeting to discuss how to deal with future cold snaps.
The issues on the agenda will include how salt for the treatment of roads can be brought in and controlled by the council.
Modifying existing equipment to help keep footpaths clear is also being explored. Chief among the options are the fitting of snow devices on grass cutters and small diggers.
Officials are exploring this, but say as well as the equipment issue, they also have to explore where to pile up the snow and how best to ensure safe access. Officials say the footpaths issue will also have to be addressed in consultation with retailers and other groups and businesses in the town.
Meanwhile, on the issue of acquiring salt, Mayor Cllr Tadhg Culbert was told that as well as issues with buying and paying for the salt, storage is also an issue, with County Manager Seamus Neely pointing out that building a salt barn for Letterkenny Town Council could exhaust the entire roads budget for one year.
It’s been decided to hold a special meeting before the end of April to consider all options.
