No local authority-backed mortgages drawn down in Donegal

Latest figures from the Department of Housing reveal that in Donegal, no local authority-backed mortgages have been drawn down, under the Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan scheme.
Nationally, just 19 of the loans, aimed at helping people get on the property market have been drawn down between January and June of this year.
The Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan scheme was introduced to enable people obtain loans to purchase a home as long as they met a strict criteria and have been refused mortgages from banks multiple times.
Figures from the Department of Housing show that between January and June this year, just 19 local authority-backed mortgages were drawn down, none of which were in Donegal.
In September, Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle tabled a motion to the Housing Minister which revealed that during the fourth quarter of 2017, only 23 applications for the loan were submitted in Donegal, 8 of which were refused and only 12 recommended for approval.
This has lead to criticism that the scheme is too restrictive.
Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin told the Independent the scheme needed to be radically overhauled.
