Woman robbed while doing her daily stations of the Cross in Donegal Town

Donegal woman’s handbag, €200 cash and her passport were stolen while she was doing her daily Stations of the Cross in her local Catholic church, a court heard
Nancy McGinty from Mountcharles, was jailed for a week for stealing the material from Mary Breslin when she started her “stations” after daily Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Donegal town, on August 11.
McGinty, 59, was identified by “very clear” CCTV footage, Ballyshannon District Court was told.
McGinty, of Drumaneany, Mountcharles, Co. Donegal, admitted the theft but said she couldn’t recall what she did with the property which was never recovered.
The court heard that McGinty was a chronic alcoholic who had previous convictions for drunkenness and public order offences but this was the first time she was charged with theft.
Garda Sean Rogers told Judge Kevin Kilrane that while McGinty was an alcoholic he didn’t believe she was unaware of what she did with the cash and passport.
Judge Kilrane remanded McGinty in custody for a week to Mountjoy Women’s Prison with a recommendation that she be psychiatric-ally assessed.
The judge said he had  to know if she knew what happened to the money and passport and she was  not telling him.
