South Donegal Deputy calls for investigation into cars ‘unjustly seized’ by customs

A South Donegal Deputy is calling on the Department of Finance to investigate whether cars are being “unjustly seized” by customs for non-payment of VRT.

Deputy Marian Harkin believes there is a discrepancy between the number of warnings issued compared to the number of vehicles impounded.

Currently, customs officers have the power to seize a vehicle from an Irish citizen who is driving a vehicle which is not registered in the state.

Deputy Harkin says powers must be exerted proportionately and fairly:
