South Inishowen compared to ‘third world country’ on day 3 without water

The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council has compared South Inishowen to a third world country as residents enter day three without water.

The water supply in Inch, Magherabeg and Burnfoot has been affected by a burst water main since Wednesday.

Works were due to commence this week to replace the line however, Irish Water informed residents that works would be delayed by a month.

Councillor Jack Murray says to prioritise works in another area is totally unacceptable:

Irish Water says works to replace old water mains in Inch Island are prioritised on approval based on burst frequency.

The utility says the works are currently moving through a detailed design and site investigation stage.

Crews are currently on site in the Magherabeg area repairing a burst water mains repairs to a separate burst was carried out on the mains supply yesterday.

Statement in full:

Crews are on site in the Magherabeg area of Inishowen this morning repairing a burst water mains.

Irish Water and Donegal County Council are working to restore water supply as quickly as possible to customers in the Magherabeg, Burnfoot and surrounding areas in Co Donegal.

Works are scheduled to continue until 4pm. Typically it takes two to three hours following the completion of repairs for normal supply to be restored to all customers affected by an unplanned outage.

Crews repaired a separate burst on the mains yesterday and water was restored to customers.

We understand the inconvenience unplanned outages can have on customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to return the water supply.

Irish water in partnership with Donegal County Council are prioritising the replacement of old water mains in Inch Island, Co. Donegal with new modern pipes. These Inch works have been prioritised following Irish Water approval basis on burst frequency. This section of works is currently moving through a detailed design and site investigation stage. The planned commencement for construction is May 2022. In advance of this project moving to construction Irish Water will proactively communicate clear details of the project to the local community and to related stakeholders in the area.
