Garda checkpoints in place for Slow Down Day

Garda checkpoints will be in operation this morning as part of National Slow Down Day.

During this 24 hour campaign, Gardaí are warning the Christmas and New Year period is one of the busiest and most dangerous times on Irish roads.

184 people have been killed in road traffic collisions on our roads this year, 17 more than this time last year.

In the latest figures released by Gardaí, 5,300 drivers were detected for speeding offences last week alone.

This initiative will last until midnight tonight as gardaí are aiming to promote safe driving and reduce speed related collisions.

More than 2,000 checkpoints will be carried out nationwide, including drink and drug testing checkpoints and high-visibility patrols.
