Need for more gardai highlighted at meeting of Donegal LCSP

The inaugural public meeting Donegal’s Local Community Safety Partnership has heard calls for more gardai in the county.

Concerns were raised by local representatives about the increased availability of drugs in the county, while an increase in burglaries was also highlighted.

This led Peoples’ Participation Network representative Joe Boland, the partnership’s Vice-Chair, to call for a renewed focus on Neighbourhood Watch and Community Alert.

The need for more garda visibility was also highlighted by members with Arranmore Island representative John McCaffrey recalling travelling from West Donegal to Galway, and not seeing a single squad car.  Ballyshannon based Superintendent Sandra Duffy was asked about the need for more gardai in rural areas. She stressed that is a matter for the Garda Commissioner.

The need for more gardai was also raised with the Superintentent by retired Sergeant James Trearty, a member of the Donegal PPN.………..
