Feighan says turnover might be a better way to determine commercial rates

 

A South Donegal TD and Junior Minister says he believes there needs to be a discussion on overhauling the rates system.

Minister Frank Feighan was responding to Wexford Deputy Malcolm Byrne, who told the Dail the bill governing how rates are calculated and local government is funded was signed into law by King George the Fourth, 200 years ago this year.

Deputy Byrne said the law has no provision to allow online retailers such as Amazon to be brought into the rates system, further disadvantaging local businesses who have substantial overheads linked to premises.

Minister Feighan responded that a model based on turnover might be a fairer way to go…………..
