
A retired retained firefighter from Arranmore Island has criticised suggestions that the island’s fire service could operate on a voluntary basis.
In a statement issued yesterday, Donegal County Council said there was “no proposal to downgrade the voluntary fire service on Arranmore Island.”
However, speaking on the Greg Hughes Show this morning, former retained firefighter John Boyle challenged that stance.
He argued that the removal of two retained firefighter posts would have a direct impact on the island’s fire service.
Mr Boyle also stressed that the people of Arranmore already make a significant voluntary contribution to their community, particularly through the RNLI, and should not be expected to volunteer to provide another essential emergency service:
