James McCarthy, Seamus Coleman and James McClean were among the stand-out performers in Stockholm.
The result leaves the team on-course to get the four points Giovanni Trapattoni wanted from the games against Sweden and Austria who come to the Aviva on Tuesday night.
Ireland who are still unbeaten away from home in competitive games under Trap are on 7 points in Group C and 1 point off the runners up spot.
