Traffic in Letterkenny was a hot topic at today’s meeting of Letterkenny Milford Muncipal District.
A number of councillors raised the ongoing congestion at the meeting in Milford Public Services Centre
Several motions addressing specific issues were raised, including one seeking a proactive meeting regarding Christmas traffic, and a one-way system at Knocknamona Roundabout for traffic relating to Little Angels School, both raised by Cllr Thomas Sean Devine.
Then, Cllr Michael McBride proposed that an urgent workshop be held to consider all possible remedies to traffic congestion in Letterkenny.
He said he was unsatisfied with the response he received, noting that it stated this would not align with the Letterkenny Transport Plan 2023–2029.
Next, Cllr Gerry McMonagle asked if the Transport Minister had replied to a request for a meeting to discuss traffic issues and future road investment funding in the town. It was revealed that the request made in 2025 was declined due to the Minister’s busy schedule, but that a further letter would be issued by the Council.
He also again stressed the importance of a town bus service.
Finally, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, backed by Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly, said that all of the councillors’ motions today are calling for the same thing: solutions.
He proposed that Active Travel projects which have already passed through planning be suspended.
These include the Ballyraine Road to Tesco roundabout project and the Circular Road project, from the hospital roundabout to the top of Glencar. He also called for the Council to seek specialist traffic consultants to look at short-, medium- and long-term solutions.
Cllr Brogan believes that a recent €20 million funding announcement for the Letterkenny Northern Relief Road, known locally as the Windyhall Road, will alleviate traffic congestion on the Circular Road.
However, the Windyhall Road and Circular Road works will end up running at the same time.
He said the Windyhall Road would seriously alleviate pressure on the Circular Road, but the works have to be mostly complete by 2028.
Cllr Brogan’s motion was passed and is to be addressed at a senior management meeting of the Council on Friday.
