Derry Council to be asked to back preparations for Irish unity referendum

Derry City and Strabane District Council is to be asked to urge the British and Irish Governments to begin preparations for a referendum on Irish unity.

Sinn Féin Councillor Conor Heaney will bring the motion to council, which also condemns recent comments from the British Prime Minister that a referendum was “off the table”.

Cllr Heaney says the right to a referendum is part of the Good Friday Agreement and is calling for discussions between both governments on setting a date:
