HIQA has published two reports on designated centres for older people in Donegal, following unannounced inspections at Áras Ghaoth Dobhair and Falcarragh Community Hospital.
Eight areas of non-compliance were identified at Áras Ghaoth Dobhair, while three were found at Falcarragh Community Hospital.
At Áras Ghaoth Dobhair, where 37 residents were present during the inspection, inspectors found a satisfactory standard of care. Staff were familiar with residents’ needs and provided support in a respectful and calm manner.
However, non-compliance was identified in areas including governance and management, residents’ rights, premises, medicines management and individual care plans. Seven regulations were found to be substantially compliant, while three were compliant.

At Falcarragh Community Hospital, which had 27 residents, inspectors found that residents were satisfied with their care and support. Residents said they felt safe and comfortable, and were well supported to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.
The three areas of non-compliance related to contracts for the provision of services, governance and management, and fire precautions. Four regulations were found to be substantially compliant, while the remaining eight were compliant.

Management at both centres is now undertaking work to address the issues identified.
