Overall crime was down 15% in the Letterkenny district in the first three months of the year, according to a report presented to the town’s Joint Policing Committee.
Superintendent Vincent O’Brien said burglaries were down 2%, but aggravated burglaries were up 300%, although he stressed that was coming from a very low base, rising from 4 to 7.
Theft and related crime were down 10%, but there were some specific increases, with theft from shops up 34% and theft from cars up 15%.
Superintendent O’Brien says a number of recent robberies have been linked to high dependency drug addicts who have recently moved into town, and action has been taken in those cases. He says this has contributed to a high rate of detection in some instances:
