PAC chair says treatment of whistleblowers in Ireland ‘disgusting’

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee says the treatment of whistleblowers in Ireland is “disgusting”.
John McGuinness was responding to the Garda Commissioner, who yesterday said he found it disgusting that allegations of corruption in the penalty points system, were brought forward by just two members of the force.
Martin Callinan is considering legal action to stop whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe attending another hearing next week.
PAC Chairman John McGuinness says the whistleblowers lives have been damaged by coming forward – he says that is not fair.
“What I find disgusting is how whistleblowers are treated in the country” he said.
“Had we listened to the  whistleblower in the Department of Finance we might not have had the crash-landing that we had”.
“This particular  whistleblower says in informing on what he saw as irregularities in the system – he did so through various ways and means – that his life is now destroyed”.
“The question is, should that be the case?” he added.
