Finn Harps bring the curtain down on their 2014 season when newly crowned First Division Champions Longford Town make the trip to Finn Park on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 3.00pm).
While his side reached the semi-finals of the FAI Cup, it has been an overall disappointing season for Harps in Ollie Horgan’s first year in charge at the club.
“It has certainly been a mixed year,” said Horgan, as he reflected on the season which is about to come to an end.
“The middle part of the season was most pleasing when we went on an unbeaten run for a long period. However, we couldn’t sustain it and fell away towards the end. The cup run was enjoyable although it came to an abrupt end last Sunday.
“To be fair, the players and staff have given a savage effort but we still have come up short in the league,” continued Horgan.
Horgan will be hoping to end the season on a high on Sunday when Longford Town visit Ballybofey. The midlanders were crowned First Division Champions last weekend when they defeated Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ 5-0 at the City Calling Stadium.
“Longford have a great mixture of experience added to a few young talented lads. David O’Sullivan has scored over 20 goals this season with Gary Shaw not far behind him but defensively they are also strong, conceding very few.” said Horgan.
Gareth Harkin is suspended for Sunday’s game, but otherwise Horgan should have a full squad to choose from.
So, as his first season in charge is about to come to an end, Horgan will already have next season in mind come the final whistle on Sunday evening. And he will know that a big improvement on this season will be needed if Harps are to challenge for promotion in 2015.
“We need to improve in all areas for next season to try to climb up the table. A few new faces would be nice in certain areas of the field but that is easier said than done,” he concluded.
Diamaid Doherty will have LIVE updates from Finn Park on Highland Sunday Sport.
