EU should relax fishing restrictions for small boats – Cope

FIshermen could be putting themselves in danger because of the economic situation.
That’s according to North West MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher, who is calling on the European Commission to pay greater heed to the needs of fishermen living on Islands and in remote parts of the country.
He’s suggesting the EU create regional blocks which could avail of certain exceptions to general EU policies. He’s particularly anxious to have restrictions on smaller-sized fishing vessels eased off the Donegal and North West.
Mr Gallagher says at present, small scale fishing is banned in North West waters, but allowed elsewhere, and that’s forcing some skippers to take risks………
