The Donegal South West by-election will be held three weeks from today on Thursday November 25th. The decision was ratified without a vote in the Dail within the past half hour. Fine Gael attempts to move the writs for three outstanding by-elections in Dublin South, Waterford and Donegal North East have been defeated.
Earlier there were rowdy scenes in the Dail, when the opposition accused the Government of wasting taxpayers money by appealing the decision in order to prevent further legal challenges on other vacant seats. Proceedings were suspended twice during an acrimonious debate.
Speaking during the debate on the Donegal South West poll, Tanaiste Mary Coughlan repeated the government’s position that it would have been preferable to wait until the spring. However, she said, the people of her constituency would now have very important decisions to make…….
The constituency’s other TD, Fine Gael’s Dinny Mc Ginley says when the campaign is in full swing, Fianna Fail ministers will have the opportunity to come to Donegal and see what the party’s legacy in the county really is………
