It’s becoming increasingly likely that Fine Gael will add a second candidate to the ticket in Donegal North East, with South Inishowen Cllr John Ryan saying he wants to contest the general election.
Cllr Ryan had been nominated to contest the selection convention earlier this month, but withdrew when party HQ insisted on a one candidate strategy.
However, following a series of meetings, Cllr Ryan says he now expects to be added, with a party meeting in Buncrana last night the latest to argue that the peninsula needs a Fine Gael candidate.
Cllr Ryan accepts that this would mean four candidates in the Inishowen area three of them high profile councillors. However, he believes Fine Gael can do well, and says it’s the wish of the organisation in Inishowen that he go forward……….
Don NE Deputy Joe Mc Hugh says he understands the depth of feeling in Inishopwen, and will accept the direction of party HQ.
He says the most important thing is that a decision is made as quickly as possible so the constituency campaign can be planned.
He says whatever happens, Fine Gael in Donegal North East will fight the election as a united party…….
